Hmm.. i think they use pretty much same dithering style ( atleast V2x00 and VD2..) but VD2 has really washed colors and/or poor contrast.

In theory, yes,.. and even when bilinear filtering is gone, there might be way to offset texels in that way that they would not be strictly "top" of each other..
There is one big problem... all 4 textures are basicly in same texture, so in reality there is not much one can do... i dont know how to impement light mapping using just one "huge" texture. But if there is way to adjust all bilinear sampling points freely, then this grazy idea could work...
